LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN -- Joanna Smith and Taylor Robinson combined for 33 points and the Covenant women's basketball team used a stout defensive effort to rout visiting Toccoa Falls, 78-26, on Thursday night inside Barnes PE Center.
Smith crossed over the 1,200-career point plateau with her 18 points. The senior also grabbed seven rebounds with two assists and two steals. Robinson scored 10 of her 15 points in the first half and was 6-of-9 from the field with three 3-pointers to go along with seven rebounds and three steals.
Covenant (9-15) held the visiting Screaming Eagles to 21.4 percent shooting for the game and forced 35 turnovers. The Scots have won all 17 all-time contests with Toccoa Falls, all by double digits.
The Scots opened the game on a 12-0 run, capped by a Bekah Walter jumper with 4:48 left in the first quarter. Covenant held Toccoa Falls scoreless for nearly six minutes to begin the contest before a Grace Crowl jumper ended the streak.
Ahead 16-10 late in the first period, Covenant used a 17-0 run over a span of four-plus minutes to gain a 33-10 lead. Kaley Hallmark had five points during the run that put the game out of reach. Covenant led 44-18 at the half after shooting 43.8 percent (17-of-39) over the first two quarters.
The lead continued to grow for the Scots in the second half. Covenant held Toccoa Falls to just four points in both the third and four quarters and the 52-point margin to end the game was the largest lead of the night for the Scots.
Covenant saw 11 players in the scoring column. Hallmark had eight points and four steals, while Walter finished with six points, four assists, and four rebounds. Raquel Rosa scored seven points and had a game-best eight rebounds.
Off the bench, Hannah Monday tallied six points and six boards with Margo Koby also chipping in six points. Abi Chatham had a game-high six assists to go with two steals. Grace Potter (four points), Nichole Rittgers (three), and Morgan Douglass (three) all tallied points. Riley Wagaman collected a pair of rebounds.
The Scots shot 44.6 percent (33-of-74) for the game with six 3-pointers. Covenant held a 54-24 advantage on the boards and scored 15 second-chance points.
Toccoa Falls (3-22) was led by Ariel Jackson's nine points and five rebounds. The Screaming Eagles were 9-of-42 from the field.
Covenant hosts LaGrange for the regular season finale on Saturday at 3 p.m. Senior Day recognition will take place at 2:45 p.m.
