Women's Basketball Falls to Berea as Smith Posts Double-Double

LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN -- Joanna Smith recorded her third double-double of the year and moved into fourth on the all-time rebounds list as the Covenant women's basketball team fell to Berea, 71-61, on Wednesday night inside Barnes PE Center.

Smith led all players with 20 points and 11 rebounds to lead the Scots. With her ninth rebound on the night, she passed former Scot Jessie Blankenship for fourth on the all-time rebound list. She is just one short of 800 career rebounds.

Taylor Robinson pitched in with 11 points, while Kaley Hallmark and Bekah Walter had nine each. Raquel Rosa had four of the team's 14 assists.

Covenant (4-11, 2-5 USA South) got off to a slow start falling behind 17-6 before Berea (10-3, 6-0 USA South) took a 22-point lead into the half. The Mountaineers then used a 10-point run in the third quarter to stretch the lead to their largest of the night at 55-32.

The Scots responded outscoring the guests 24-16 in the fourth. Covenant was able to cut the lead to eight making the score 69-61 with 44 seconds to go but could not hit a bucket down the stretch as Berea held on to remain undefeated in USA South competition.

Bailee Vanover paced the Mountaineers with 17 points while Kristin Barnes was on her heels with 15. Nakeisha Greene pulled down 10 rebounds while Bethanie Williams led all players with five assists.

The Scots were able to force 19 turnovers and outscore Berea 26-22 in points off turnovers. Covenant shot 35 percent (21-of-60) overall as free throws proved to be the difference going 13-22 from the line. Berea shot 47.3 percent (26-of-55) from the floor and made 10 3-pointers. The Mountaineers held a 42-33 rebounding edge despite 16 offensive boards for the Scots.
