RICHARDSON, Texas -- After 13 days off for Christmas, the Covenant women's basketball team opened the second half of its season with a 76-48 loss to No. 19/23 Texas-Dallas on Friday evening in the UT Dallas Classic.
The loss was the second straight for Covenant (2-8). Texas-Dallas, ranked No. 19 in the current WBCA Top 25 and No. 23 in the D3hoops.com poll, goes to 8-3 overall.
Covenant hung with the nationally-ranked Comets through the first two periods and trailed by eight, 33-25, at the break. Over the first two quarters, Covenant forced Texas-Dallas into 17 turnovers and converted those into 13 points.
The Scots trailed 19-11 entering the second and saw that deficit expand to 14 midway through the second. However, Covenant finished the first half with a flurry, going on a 10-4 run over the final five minutes, capped by a Hannah Monday bucket as time expired in the period, to get the Scots within eight at halftime.
Texas-Dallas opened up a double-digit lead with a strong third period. The Comets shot just 40 percent from the field in the period, but made 10-of-13 from the free throw line and outscored Covenant by 11 to take a 58-39 lead into the final quarter. Covenant would not be able to slice into the deficit any further as the Comets pulled away for the win.
Taylor Robinson led Covenant with her 13 points to go along with four rebounds. Kaley Hallmark added eight points and Joanna Smith chipped in six points and seven rebounds. The Scots connected on just 32.1 percent (18-of-56) from the field.
Texas-Dallas had three players score in double figures led by Raenett Hughes' 19 points. Victoria Pena added a double-double of 14 points and 10 rebounds to go with four assists and six steals. Kelley Skinner totaled 11 points and seven boards. The Comets were limited to 36.9 percent (24-of-65) shooting, but made up for it with a 22-for-29 effort at the foul line.
Covenant concludes the UT Dallas Classic on Saturday against McMurry. Tip-off is set for 4 p.m. EST (3 p.m. CST) at the UTD Activity Center.
