LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN -- The Covenant women's basketball team finished the 2016-17 season with the most wins since 2012-13, ending with a 12-13 record overall and 6-8 in conference play under fourth-year head coach Sarah Harris. Covenant also qualified for the USA South Tournament for the first time.

The season got off to a strong start, as the Scots won their first four games. In a win over Mary Baldwin on Nov. 19, 2016, the Scots scored 100 points for the first time since February of 2008. The 4-0 start to the season was the best was the best since 1996-97.

In the first game of 2017, the Scots overcame a 17-point deficit in the third quarter to defeat Sewanee on the road with a score of 69-62.

At the end of the first half, Covenant was down 43-30 after Sewanee shot 8-for-14 from 3-point land. Sewanee continued the scoring run until the 8:27 mark in the third quarter, with a 17-point lead at 49-32.

After this, however, the Scots began chipping away at the lead, scoring eight straight to cut the lead to single-digits. By the end of the third quarter, Sewanee led by seven. It wasn't until the final three minutes that Covenant was able to finally catch up, as Alex Quimby made two free throws to tie the game at 59.

Sewanee answered the tie by converting an and-one to put the host Tigers up 62-59. But after that, the Scots scored the next 10 points to complete the comeback and earn the 69-62 win. Covenant held Sewanee to 17.6 percent shooting in the fourth quarter.

All told, the Scots would outscore Sewanee 37-13 over the final 18:27 of the game to take the victory.

Joanna Smith fulfilled her role as the season's leading scorer after dropping 21 points in the contest, plus seven rebounds. Senior Rachel Price added 10 points and six boards, and Quimby finished with nine points.

The team out-rebounded Sewanee 46-19, with 14 offensive rebounds to convert 21 second-chance points compared to Sewanee's 12 points. Covenant also pushed the tempo in transition, scoring 11 fastbreak points.
