DECATUR, Ga. -- Emma Grimes had a career-high 26 points and Joanna Smith recorded a double-double with 18 points and 12 rebounds to lead the Covenant women's basketball team to an 80-58 USA South victory at Agnes Scott on Saturday evening.
Covenant (8-8, 2-4 USA South) has won two straight contests and moves back to .500 overall on the season.
Grimes knocked down eight 3-pointers, one shy of tying the program record, and also dished out seven assists with her 26-point performance. Smith tallied eight offensive rebounds on the day to collect her fourth double-double of the season.
Covenant scorched the nets to the tune of 62.5 percent (10-of-16) in the first quarter to take a 28-15 lead. Grimes hit five 3-pointers in the period as the Scots built a double-digit advantage.
In the second, Covenant held the host Scotties scoreless for several minutes and would extend the lead to 22 at 37-15 after a Smith steal and layup. The lead grew to 24 points and the Scots held a 44-24 edge entering halftime. Agnes Scott got within 11 at the end of the third period, but Covenant pulled away again in the fourth quarter by outscoring the Scotties 20-9 in the period to take the victory.
Aleigha Williams scored 13 points and had seven rebounds for Covenant. Jessica Bell came off the bench to score eight points and Kaley Hallmark had seven points. Covenant shot an even 50 percent (33-of-66) for the game with 10 3-pointers.
Agnes Scott (2-11, 1-6 USA South) was led by reigning national player of the week Garis Grant and her 19 points and 10 rebounds. Adriana Figueroa and Natasha Banks had 12 points each for the Scotties. Agnes Scott connected on 40 percent (20-of-50) from the field and from deep (8-of-20).
Covenant will host USA South West foe Huntingdon on Friday, Jan. 27. Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m. at Barnes PE Center.
