LAGRANGE, Ga. -- The Covenant women's basketball team received a game-high 16 points from Kaley Hallmark, but could not get enough offensive support in a 62-53 loss at LaGrange on Friday night.
Covenant (6-7, 0-3 USA South) falls under .500 for the first time this season. LaGrange improves to 7-6 overall and 3-1 in league action.
Hallmark's 16, just one shy of tying her career high, came on 6-of-8 shooting from the field with four 3-pointers and zero turnovers. Covenant hit nine 3-pointers as a team, tying a season-high, and shot 42.9 percent (21-of-49) from the field overall. Emma Grimes joined Hallmark in double-digit scoring with 11 points, two assists and two rebounds. Rachel Price chipped in four points, seven rebounds and two assists.
Covenant took its only lead of the contest in the first period as a Grimes jumper gave the Scots a 5-4 edge with 5:56 left in the quarter. LaGrange answered with a 12-3 run and led 16-12 entering the second. Covenant rallied in the second and would tie the score at 24 apiece after a Grimes 3-pointer with 3:40 left, but again LaGrange had a response as the Panthers finished the period on an 11-2 run to take a 35-26 lead into halftime.
The Scots outscored LaGrange 15-10 in the third to draw within 45-41 going into the final 10 minutes. Covenant was 6-of-9 from the field in the quarter and Hallmark scored five of her 16 points in the period.
In the fourth, LaGrange extended the lead out to double figures and Covenant would only be able to trim the deficit to five in the final two minutes before LaGrange hit free throws to seal the win.
Kelsey Walthall had 15 points to lead LaGrange, while Austin Richardson had 10 off the bench for the Panthers. LaGrange also shot 42.9 percent (24-of-56) from the floor, but was held to just 4-of-15 on 3-point attempts.
