JACKSON, Miss. -- The Covenant women's basketball team suffered its second straight defeat in as many days in Jackson with a 79-69 loss at Belhaven on Saturday afternoon at Rugg Arena.
The loss drops the Scots to 5-4 on the year, while Belhaven improved to 6-5 with the victory.
Aleigha Williams paced Covenant with 20 points to go along with five rebounds and three steals. Grace Potter registered a career-high 13 points with six rebounds, while Kaley Hallmark had 11 points, seven assists and three boards.
After a sluggish start for Covenant, the Scots only trailed 38-30 entering halftime. The Scots put together their best quarter of the afternoon in the third as they outscored the host Blazers 22-13 in the period to take a 52-51 lead going into the final stanza.
Covenant shot 53.3 percent in the quarter and pieced together a 14-3 run to erase a 40-32 deficit and take a 44-43 lead on an Alex Quimby layup with 4:18 left in the period. A Potter 3-pointer in the final 30 seconds of the quarter gave Covenant the lead once again at 52-51.
Through the first four-plus minutes of the fourth Covenant was able to keep its hot-shooting pace. Potter knotted the score at 59 with 6:27 left on a driving layup and Emma Grimes knocked down three free throws with 5:41 remaining to give the Scots a 62-59 lead.
But Belhaven responded by going on a 13-2 run over the next four minutes, finished off by a Candler Gregory 3-pointer to give the Blazers a 72-64 lead with 1:27 left. Another 3-pointer from Potter and a layup from Williams sliced the deficit to 74-69 with 23 seconds left, but Belhaven was able to his free throws down the stretch.
For the game, Covenant shot 38 percent (27-of-71), but could manage just five 3-pointers. The Scots held a 52-38 rebounding edge, however Belhaven forced Covenant into 30 turnovers which led to 31 Blazer points.
Samara Dingiswayo and Sierra Pittman had 17 points apiece for Belhaven, while Gregory had 16 points. Vamikka Smith totaled 11 rebounds and nine points. Belhaven was limited to 36.8 percent (25-of-68) shooting, but converted 23-of-28 from the foul line.
Covenant will conclude the non-conference portion of its schedule on Tuesday, Jan. 3 at Sewanee. Tip-off is slated for 6 p.m. CST (7 p.m. EST).
