JACKSON, Miss. -- Joanna Smith recorded a double-double of 19 points and 11 rebounds, but the Covenant women's basketball team could not overcome a strong fourth period from host Millsaps in a 66-58 loss on Friday afternoon at the Hangar Dome.
Smith led the way for the Scots (5-3) with 19 points on 8-of-16 shooting to go along with her 11 rebounds and four steals. The double-double is Smith's second of the season. Smith was joined in double figure scoring by Aleigha Williams' 16 points and Kaley Hallmark's 10.
Millsaps led by three (43-40) entering the fourth quarter, and the Majors would shoot 61.5 percent (8-of-13) from the floor in the period to pull away from Covenant. Millsaps led by as many as 11 in the quarter and the Scots could only get as close as eight the rest of the way.
Through the first three quarters it was an even contest. Covenant took a 13-12 lead at the end of the first after Emma Grimes drained a 3-pointer with 30 seconds left. The Scots held a five-point lead at 23-18 with 2:46 left in the second period on a Smith layup. But Millsaps ended the quarter on a 7-2 run to knot the score at 25 entering halftime.
Covenant would again take a two-possession lead in the third quarter after a Hallmark jumper made it 33-29 with 5:32 remaining in the period. A 9-0 run by Millsaps, capped by a Megan Donaldson 3-pointer, gave the Majors a 38-33 lead. The Scots scored five straight to tie the score once again, but Millsaps finished the third on a 5-2 run in the final 1:20 to take the 43-40 lead into the fourth. Millsaps would then build upon that slim margin in the final frame.
Covenant shot 35.6 percent (21-of-59) for the game with six 3-pointers and a 10-for-15 effort at the foul line. The Scots forced Millsaps into 23 turnovers and held a 23-10 edge in points off turnovers.
Millsaps made up for its turnovers by shooting 51 percent (25-of-49) from the field. The Majors were led by Kala-Jewell Freeman's 15 points, while Kim Klunk had a double-double of 14 points and 15 rebounds. Brazia Jones added 11 points and three assists off the bench for Millsaps (7-4).
Covenant will stay in Jackson to face Belhaven on Saturday. Tip-off is set for 2 p.m. CST (3 p.m. EST).
