DANVILLE, Ky. -- The Covenant women's basketball team, led by Kaley Hallmark's 14 points never trailed on Friday night as the Scots took a 48-42 victory over Centre.
Covenant goes to 2-0 with the win, while Centre drops to 0-2.
The Scots grabbed a 2-0 lead on a Rachel Price jumper in the first minute of play and would never fall behind in the contest. In a game that featured cold shooting on both sides, Covenant was able to connect on 38.9 percent (21-of-54) from the field, while Centre mustered just 30.6 percent (15-of-49).
Hallmark led Covenant with 14 points to go along with seven rebounds and five assists. Aleigha Williams scored nine points off the bench and also collected four rebounds and four steals. Price added seven points, six rebounds and four assists, while Joanna Smith had six points and three steals.
Covenant led 10-6 after the opening quarter and would extend the lead to 26-16 at halftime. The lead stayed around double digits in the third period and a Williams jumper in the waning seconds gave the Scots a 37-26 lead heading into the final period.
In the fourth, Williams buried a 3-pointer on the opening possession for a 40-26 lead. Covenant led 47-35 after a Hallmark layup with 4:05 remaining. Centre would cut the lead to five at 47-42, but the Scots were able to hold on for the road win.
Caroline Andreassen led all players with 15 points for Centre (0-2). Day Vance had a game-best 10 rebounds and Cheyenne Bunner had seven points off the bench for the host Colonels.
Covenant will play Mary Baldwin on Saturday at 1 p.m. in Danville, Ky.
