FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. -- The Covenant women's basketball team has been picked fourth in the West Division of the USA South as the league unveiled its 2016-17 preseason coaches' poll on Wednesday afternoon.
Covenant, under fourth-year head coach Sarah Harris, tallied 29 total points in the poll, which is voted on exclusively by the league's head coaches. The Scots return 12 players from last season's roster, including all five starters.
Maryville topped the West with 48 total points and six of the eight first-place votes. Piedmont garnered the final two first place tallies and had 43 points, while LaGrange had 36 points. Huntingdon rounded out the top five with 27 points.
In the East, Greensboro was picked to win the division with 44 points and three first place votes.
The 2017 USA South Tournament will once again take place on campus sites. The top six seeded teams from each division will advance to the tournament. The top two overall seeds from each division will host first and quarterfinal matches on Friday, Feb. 17 and Saturday, Feb. 18. The winners of the quarterfinal contests will travel to the highest remaining seed who will host the semifinals and finals to be played on Feb. 24-25.
Covenant opens the season at home on Nov. 15 vs. Sewanee at 5:30 p.m.
