FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. -- For a sixth time this year, Covenant women's basketball freshman Joanna Smith has been named USA South Rookie of the Week, announced the conference on Monday afternoon.
Smith, who continued to maker her case as the best freshman in the USA South last week, already had five rookie of the week honors with the most recent one coming on Feb. 8.
A freshman from Chattanooga, Tenn., Smith averaged a double-double of 15.3 points and 10.0 rebounds to go along with 1.7 assists and 1.7 steals per game as the Scots posted a 2-1 record last week. In a 55-49 win over USA South foe Meredith, Smith totaled 12 points, nine rebounds, three assists and two steals. In a 73-60 victory over Wesleyan, Smith notched a double-double of 22 points and a career-high 17 rebounds to go along with two steals. In a 71-52 loss to Maryville, she contributed 12 points, four rebounds, two assists and one steal.
Smith finishes her rookie campaign by averaging 12.1 points and 9.5 rebounds, which ranked No. 2 in the USA South. She also led the team with 2.4 assists per game while shooting a team-best 49.1 percent from the field. Smith tallied nine double-doubles on the year.
