LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN -- The Covenant women's basketball team could not overcome a dominating second period from visiting Maryville in a 71-52 loss on Saturday afternoon inside Barnes PE Center.
The regular season finale loss puts the Scots with a 10-15 overall record and a 6-10 mark in the conference.
Maryville, who clinched the USA South regular season title with the win, got out to a 15-11 lead after the first period and then outscored Covenant 26-8 in the second to take a 41-19 lead at halftime. From there, the northern Scots maintained their lead to take the win and move to 21-3 overall with a 14-1 record in the USA South.
Joanna Smith led Covenant with 12 points and four rebounds, while Kaley Hallmark tallied 11 points and four boards. Rachel Price was held scoreless but grabbed a game-high nine rebounds to go with two blocks. Bekah Walter had seven points off the bench and Kate Patrick dished out three assists and scored six points.
Covenant shot just 27 percent in the first half, but upped that to 43 percent in the final two periods. The Scots outscored Maryville by three in the second half. For the game, Covenant made 35.2 percent (19-of-54) with nine 3-pointers.
Maryville was led by Madison Maples' 19 points in a reserve role. Mackenzie Puckett poured in 15 points with four rebounds while Rachel Hawn added 14 points and seven rebounds.
