FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. -- Covenant women's basketball freshman Joanna Smith has been named the USA South Rookie of the Week, announced the conference on Monday.
The honor is the fifth this season for Smith. She also earned the weekly award on Nov. 23, Dec. 7, Jan. 11 and Jan. 18 of this season.
Smith, a freshman from Chattanooga, Tenn., averaged 18 points, 8.7 rebounds, 3.3 assists and 3.3 steals during the week that Covenant went 1-2. In a 70-46 win over Agnes Scott, Smith had 14 points, seven rebounds, four assists and four steals. She then tallied 18 points, 14 rebounds and four steals in a 70-67 loss to Averett on Friday. Smith capped the week with a career-high 22 points to go along with five rebounds, five assists and two steals in a 68-65 loss to Ferrum on Saturday.
On the year, Smith is averaging 11.7 points and 9.8 rebounds per game while dishing out 2.6 assists per contest. She has tallied eight double-doubles for the season and has scored 20-plus points on three occasions.
