LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN -- Three players scored in double figures, led by Joanna Smith's 14 points, to lead the Covenant women's basketball team to a 70-46 victory over Agnes Scott in non-conference action on Tuesday night inside Barnes PE Center.
The victory is the third in the last four games for the Scots, who move to 7-10 overall. Agnes Scott, which is moving to the USA South in 2016-17, drops to 3-14 overall.
Smith led Covenant with 14 points, seven rebounds and four assists. Clara Dirkse scored a career-high 13 points on 6-of-11 shooting to go along with three rebounds and an assist. Bekah Walter added 10 points, two assists and two steals in the win.
Covenant led throughout as it scored the first nine points of the contest. Kaley Hallmark scored all five of her points on the night on back-to-back possessions with a layup followed by a 3-pointer giving the Scots a 9-0 lead less than three minutes into the game. Covenant extended the lead to 21-5 at the end of the first period as Dirkse collected an offensive rebound and made a putback as time expired.
The lead swelled to 26 at halftime as Covenant ended the second quarter on a 13-0 run, capped by a Noelle Moran fastbreak layup assisted by Dirkse, to make it 39-13.
In the third, Covenant grabbed its largest lead of the contest at 32 after a Dirkse 3-pointer made it 51-19. Agnes Scott eventually cut the lead to 16 in the fourth, but Covenant kept the pressure on to seal the win.
The Scots shot a season-best 49.2 percent (30-of-61) from the field and outrebounded the Scotties 38-27. Agnes Scott was limited to 33.3 percent (17-of-51) shooting and committed 23 turnovers.
Laniqua Collins registered a double-double with 17 points and 10 rebounds to lead Agnes Scott. Jalexis Teemer and Jakaria Fleming added 10 points each.
Covenant will host Averett on Friday at 5:30 p.m. at Barnes PE Center.
