LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN -- Two Covenant basketball plays from the month of January can be voted on as the USA South's Play of the Month. Will Portlock's buzzer-beating winner at Williams Peace on Jan. 15 is the men's basketball nominee, while Aleigha Williams' driving layup vs. Methodist on Jan. 30 is in the running for the women's basketball play of the month.
Portlock's jumper is up against plays from Averett, Greensboro, Maryville, Methodist, Piedmont and William Peace. Williams' layup, assisted by Morgan Douglass, is being voted on with plays from Averett, Maryville and Piedmont.
Voting is done exclusively by fans and will conclude on Thursday, Feb. 4 at 1 p.m. when the winner will be announced.
The USA South introduced this new endeavor for the 2015-16 basketball seasons as each month a "Men's Basketball Play of the Month" and "Women's Basketball Play of the Month" will be chosen. For each of the four months during the regular season, dynamic plays will be submitted by the coaching staffs of each institution. The winners are chosen by fan voting and will be featured both on the USA South website and its social networking outlets (Twitter / YouTube / Instagram). At the end of the season, each monthly winner will be nominated for Play of the Year.
