FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. -- For a fourth time this year, and a second consecutive week, Covenant women's basketball freshman Joanna Smith has been named the USA South's Rookie of the Week, announced the league on Monday.
Smith also won the award last week and has four Rookie of the Week accolades for the season (Nov. 23, Dec. 7, Jan. 11).
The freshman from Chattanooga, Tenn., helped lead Covenant to a 1-1 week by averaging 16 points, 11.5 rebounds, four assists and 2.5 steals per game. In a triple-overtime victory over William Peace on Friday, she tallied 16 points, 13 rebounds, five assists and four steals. Smith then had 16 points, 10 rebounds, three assists, two blocks and a steal in a 63-58 loss at North Carolina Wesleyan on Saturday.
She has collected double-doubles in four straight games and has seven for the year. Smith is averaging 11.7 points and 10.8 rebounds per game (second-best in the USA South). She also leads the team with 2.7 assists, while shooting 44.7 percent from the field on the year.
