RALEIGH, N.C. -- In the first triple-overtime game in program history, the Covenant women's basketball team took a thrilling 75-71 victory at William Peace on Friday night inside the Hermann Center in Raleigh.
The victory is the second straight for the Scots and moves them to 4-8 overall and 2-3 in conference play. William Peace drops to 5-8 on the year and 0-5 in USA South contests.
Aleigha Williams notched her second career double-double with 17 points and 10 rebounds to go along with five steals. Joanna Smith, the reigning USA South Rookie of the Week, tallied her third consecutive double-double as she tallied 16 points and 13 rebounds with five assists and four steals.
On record, Covenant had never played in a three overtime game in the program's history until Friday. The Scots had played in a few double-overtime contests with the last coming on Feb. 13, 2004 at Bluefield--a 90-79 victory.
Covenant secured a single-game program record 72 rebounds in the win. Rachel Price had 10 rebounds along with six points, while Kaley Hallmark added a season-high 11 rebounds with seven points and five assists.
Friday's contest went back and forth with 17 ties and nine lead changes throughout. Covenant took a 19-11 lead after the first quarter as Williams scored seven points in the period. Both teams struggled offensively in the second, but Covenant was able to hold to a 22-18 edge entering halftime.
Covenant held a 43-38 lead entering the fourth quarter, but William Peace rallied and tied the score at 51 apiece on a Hannah Ericksen layup with 1:35 remaining in regulation. Both teams had chances late but neither could convert as the contest entered overtime.
The Scots scored the first three points in the first overtime period and later led by three at 61-58 after a Patrick layup with 59 seconds left. William Peace's Brittany Boykin tied the score again with a 3-pointer with 43 ticks left and again neither team could score to send it into a second overtime.
Trailing 66-64 with 2:18 left in the second overtime, Hallmark made a pair of free throws and Clara Dirkse drained a 3-pointer with 1:01 left giving the Scots a 69-66 lead. After getting a defensive stop, Covenant could not seal the game at the free throw line and William Peace took advantage. Zhana Gooden buried a 3-pointer with 17 seconds left to once again tie the score. Alex Quimby's 3-point attempt as time expired was off the mark.
Finally in the third overtime, Covenant scored the final six points of the period to get the conference road win. Trailing 71-70 with under a minute to play, Jessica Bell collected an offensive rebound and made a layup giving the Scots a 72-71 lead with 48 seconds left. Patrick made two free throws on the following possession and Smith added one more to ice the game with 10 seconds left.
Bell scored nine points with four rebounds off the bench for Covenant.
