MARYVILLE, Tenn. -- The Covenant women's basketball team trailed 14th-ranked Maryville 25-22 at halftime, but Maryville pulled away in the second half for a 55-35 victory in the USA South opener for Covenant on Saturday.
Kaley Hallmark led the way for Covenant (2-6, 0-1 USA South) with 12 points, 10 of which came in the first half, to go along with seven rebounds. Rachel Price added eight points, 12 rebounds and three steals in the loss.
Maryville (7-1, 2-0 USA South), ranked 14th in the latest USA Today Division III Top 25, pulled away from Covenant in the second half thanks to Mackenzie Puckett's 13 points and seven rebounds. Allyson Freiermuth added 12 points and eight rebounds for the host Scots.
Covenant stayed within striking distance through the first two quarters. Covenant limited the potent Maryville offense to 31 percent shooting in the half with 10 turnovers. The Scots also held a 21-19 rebounding edge in the half, seven of those coming from Price. A Hallmark 3-pointer with 42 seconds remaining in the second quarter drew Covenant to within 25-22.
The final two quarters were controlled by Maryville. Covenant struggled to find the range from the field and Maryville extended its lead to 42-28 at the end of the third period before securing the win in the fourth.
Covenant will be off for finals and Christmas before getting back into action on Saturday, jan. 2 against USA South foe LaGrange inside Barnes PE Center. Tip-off is set for 2 p.m.
