MACON, Ga. -- Joanna Smith produced her second double-double of the year with 12 points and 16 rebounds to help lead the Covenant women's basketball team to a 70-46 victory over Wesleyan on Saturday afternoon at Porter Gymnasium.
Smith set season-highs in both categories and she also tallied four assists and four steals to lead the Scots. Rachel Price set a career-high with 14 points to go with eight points and three steals in the victory for Covenant (2-4), while Jessica Bell and Kate Patrick came off the bench to tally 10 points apiece.
Covenant grabbed 66 rebounds on the day, with 28 coming on the offensive glass, the most in a game for the program since 2010. The Scots had 17 second chance points and 32 points in the paint.
Wesleyan (1-7) set the pace early on by taking a 17-10 lead after the first quarter. Covenant outscored the host Wolves 13-9 in the second period to draw within 26-23 at halftime.
The third quarter was completely dominated by the Scots. Covenant outscored Wesleyan 26-4 in the period, shooting 50 percent (10-of-20) along the way. Smith had eight points in the quarter, while Bell added five. A Patrick 3-pointer in the waning seconds of the period gave the Scots a 49-30 advantage.
Covenant scored the five points of the fourth as Bell converted a conventional three-point play and Bekah Walter made a layup to put the Scots up 54-30 with 8:17 left. Covenant cruised from that point forward to seal the win and snap a four-game losing streak.
Wesleyan received 15 points from Audrey Holloway and seven from Keiona Benjamin.
Covenant shot 34.6 percent (27-of-78) from the floor, while limiting Wesleyan to only 30.8 percent (20-of-65).
Covenant will host Sewanee on Tuesday inside Barnes PE Center. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. Sewanee defeated Covenant 75-68 on Nov. 17.
