Nationally-Ranked Maryville Takes Down Scots

MARYVILLE, Tenn. -- Morgan Woodward had 12 points and six rebounds, but the visiting Covenant women's basketball team fell 86-51 to Maryville in USA South play on Tuesday night.

Maryville, ranked nationally by both (22nd) and USA Today (24th), improves to 11-1 overall and a perfect 3-0 in league play. Covenant drops to 0-13 and 0-5.

Woodward went 6-of-10 from the field and scored in double digits for the seventh time this season in the defeat. Abbey Bailey tallied 10 points, while Liz Dougherty had eight points and a team-high three assists. Kiersten Nielsen and Alex Quimby each had five points.

Covenant made 40 percent (22-of-55) from the field. The Scots turned the ball over a season-low 13 times, while forcing 12 Maryville giveaways.

Led by preseason All-American Mackenzie Puckett's 14 points, Maryville cruised to a 37-21 halftime lead and never looked back. The host Scots received a game-high 18 points off the bench from Lauren Trent and Alex Bond added 11 points and five assists. Maryville shot 58.7 percent (37-of-63) from the floor, including 12-of-27 from behind the 3-point line. Joanna Young registered eight assists as Maryville handed out 31 assists on 37 made field goals.

Covenant will try to snap its losing streak on Friday when it hosts USA South foe North Carolina Wesleyan inside Barnes PE Center. Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m. The women will also play Saturday against William Peace at 6 p.m. in conference play.
