Both basketball teams picked up victories this week, while the baseball team was chosen to win the USA South. The men's basketball team claimed a thrilling 98-95 overtime win at LaGrange before falling at home to USA South leader Maryville. The women's team snapped a losing streak by defeating Mary Baldwin on the road.
BY THE NUMBERS:
1: The baseball team was selected to win the USA South, by the league's 10 head coaches. The Scots become the first team in Covenant athletics history to be chosen as a conference preseason favorite in Division III. Baseball season gets underway on Feb. 18.
9: Women's basketball senior Jessie Blankenship saw her remarkable string of double-doubles come to an end at nine over the weekend. Blankenship fell one rebound shy of notching her 10th straight double-double in a loss at Meredith on Saturday. In conference-only statistics, Blankenship ranks third in the USA South in scoring average (17.0 points per game) and first in rebounds per game at 12.4.
2-0: The men's basketball team's record in overtime games this season. The Scots picked up their second extra-seesion win last week at LaGrange, 98-95. Covenant also defeated Berry in overtime on Dec. 14, 94-90. The Scots have won their last three overtime game dating back to the 2012-13 season.
Both basketball teams are at home on Wednesday against USA South foe Piedmont starting at 5:30 with the women... The men's cross country team and women's cross country runner Beth Burgess will be honored for their accomplishments between the games on Wednesday... USA South preseason polls for men's and women's tennis, golf, and softball will be released later this week... Associate Director of Athletics Tim Sceggel was honored with a national award from NADIIIAA
