It was a rough week, to say the least, for the Covenant basketball teams as both squads lost a pair of home conference games over the weekend. Methodist and Greensboro came to Lookout Mountain and left with sweeps over the Scots. Even with the losses, there were some noteworthy performances that are highlighted in today's edition of Scots Weekly.
BY THE NUMBERS:
4: Number of consecutive double-doubles for women's basketball senior Jessie Blankenship. The senior averaged 18 points and 13 rebounds over the weekend, including a 23-point, 16-rebound effort against Methodist. Over the last four games, Blankenship is averaging 16.8 points and 12.0 rebounds. She ranks third in the USA South in scoring average for conference games and first in rebounding.
1,178 and 666: Those numbers reflect the career point and rebound totals for Blankenship. She moved into 15th place all-time on the Covenant scoring leaders list at 1,178 points, passing Stephanie Law, and is now tied for sixth among rebounding leaders with Bekah Smith at 666. Only six players have tallied at least 1,170 points and 650 rebounds in program history.
15: The men's basketball team's rebound margin against Greensboro. The Scots outrebounded the Pride 44-29 for a plus-15 advantage. It marked the largest rebound edge since Feb. 16, 2013 against Huntingdon (plus-19). Covenant has outrebounded its opponent five times this year, but is only 2-3 in those contests.
Spring sports practice get underway today when the baseball team begins its preparation for the 2014 season... Women's basketball hosts Maryville on Tuesday at 5:30 p.m.... Both basketball teams will make their first USA South road trips this weekend when they travel to North Carolina Wesleyan (Friday) and William Peace (Saturday)
