Scots Weekly: Stats & Notes (Dec. 9-14)

Both basketball teams completed the fall semester portion of their schedules this past week. The men went 1-1 with a loss to Birmingham Southern before defeating Berry 94-90 in overtime on Saturday. The women went 0-2 with a close loss at Sewanee and then a home loss to Berry.

BY THE NUMBERS:

3: Number of consecutive double-doubles for men's basketball junior Colton McGriff. The junior has tallied three straight double-doubles going back to Dec. 7 at Bethany Lutheran, and four total on the year. McGriff averaged 19.5 points and 13.5 rebounds in the two games this week. He had 13 points and a career-high 14 rebounds in Friday's loss before registering 26 points and 13 rebounds in Saturday's win.

23: Number of points for men's basketball junior Nate Frierson in Saturday's overtime win against Berry. Frierson set a new career-high with 23 points that included a 12 -of-15 effort from the foul line. The junior's previous career best was 15 points.

4: The margin in the women's basketball loss at Sewanee last Tuesday. The 52-48 defeat marked the first time this season that the Scots have had a game decided by fewer than 12 points. Covenant is defeating opponents by an average of 15.3 points.

65: Number of total rebounds on the season for women's basketball sophomore Alexis Storteboom. The sophomore is second in the USA South in total rebounds and fifth in the league averaging 8.1 per game. This past week, Storteboom averaged 11 rebounds per game, including a season-high 13 against Berry, while scoring 9.5 points per game.

NOTES:

Both basketball teams will be off until Jan. 3 when they begin USA South play at home against Ferrum... The men's basketball team has already had four games in which they shot better than 50 percent from the field. Last season, the Scots had only three such games... Morgan Woodward leads the USA South in total assists with 28 on the year... Men's soccer junior Hunter Harrison was named to the NSCAA All-South Atlantic region third team last week.
