Scots Weekly: Stats & Notes (Nov. 18-23)

Basketball is now the only sport playing as we head into the winter portion of the 2013-14 athletic year. The men's team was a perfect 2-0 on the week with victories over Sewanee and Millsaps, while the women's team garnered a victory over Sewanee before falling to Millsaps.

BY THE NUMBERS:

4: The number of games this season that the men's basketball team has scored 70 or more points. Despite losing 72 percent of scoring from last season, the men have scored at least 70 in all games this season. The Scots scored 70 or more points just three times all of last year.

2: Number of career double-doubles for men's basketball junior Colton McGriff. McGriff added his second double-double of his career with a career-high 26 points to go with 11 rebounds in Covenant's 70-67 win over Millsaps on Saturday. His previous double-double came as a freshman in 2011 against Maryville.

61.5: That is the 3-point percentage for men's basketball freshman Ben Phelps for the season. Phelps was unconscious this week hitting 6-of-8 (75 percent) from downtown, including 4-of-5 against Millsaps. He is 8-of-13 for the season and is among the leaders in the USA South early on.

5-2: Covenant's combined record in men's and women's basketball against the Southern Athletic Association. Competing against the closest non-conference opponents, the men are a perfect 3-0 with wins over Berry, Sewanee and Millsaps. The women are 2-2 with wins over Berry and Sewanee.

135-104: The combined second half score for the women's basketball team this season. The Scots are outscoring their opponents by 31 in the second period of games through the first four games.

1,100: Women's basketball senior Jessie Blankenship broke 1,100 points for her career with nine points in Wednesday's 61-40 win over Sewanee. After the week, she has 1,109 career points which puts her in 18th all-time on the Covenant scoring leaders list.

NOTES:

This is the second time in the last three years that the men's basketball team has started the season 3-1 (last time in 2011-12)... Women's basketball freshman Aleigha Williams scored a season-high 18 points in Saturday's loss to Millsaps... Williams averaged 14 points during the week... The two basketball teams are at Oglethorpe on Tuesday before taking off for Thanksgiving... Both men's and women's soccer teams were recognized as NSCAA Team Academic award winners, announced the association on Thursday.
