First Place Finishes Highlight Track & Field Season Opener

SEWANEE, Tenn. -- Four first place finishes and three program records highlighted Saturday's Tiger Indoor Invitational for the Covenant track and field teams in its season opener.

The Covenant women placed third in the meet with 73 total points, while the men placed fourth with 63. It was the most points either team has scored in four trips to the meet, which is hosted by Sewanee.

The women's team claimed three top finishes on the day. Elysse Carrillo won the 400 meter event with a program record time of 1:04.09, while Virginia Kay Roberts also posted a top-10 time of 1:09.49 to place ninth.

In distance events, S.K. Lipperd took the top spot in the mile race with a time of 5:36.53, while Covenant placed two other runners (Brooke McDonald and Megan Heath) in the top five of the event. Michelann Settle nabbed the title in the 3,000 meter with a mark of 11:24.87. The Scots' Maggie Henry (second) and Ashleigh Baker (fourth) finished in the top five of the 3,000 meter.

Distance events also produced strong results on the men's side. Micaiah Allison topped his own program record in the 3,000 meter and won the event with a time of 9:17.07. Matt Seitz and Ben Mellott finished third and fourth, respectively, in the run. In the mile run, Brendan Yeager posted a time of 4:40.87 to finish second overall.

Cooper Hayes finished fourth in the pole vault with a program record mark of 3.50 meters, topping his own previous record of 3.35.

In middle distance events, Lipperd posted a time of 2:30.52 and a second place finish in the 800 meter. In the men's 800, Jonathan George finished fifth at 2:07.04, while Ben Tyson set a personal record in the 400 meter with a time of 54.93 that placed him sixth overall.

The men's 4x400 squad of Tyson, George, Karl Ferda, and Yeager came in third with a time of 3:44.95. The women's team of Lipperd, Roberts, McDonald, and Carrillo ended up second overall with a time of 4:37.82 in the event.

Anna Baker became the first Covenant women's athlete to compete in the indoor triple jump in program history. Baker's top mark was 8.33 meters.

Covenant will travel back to Sewanee for the Sewanee Indoor Invitational on Friday, Feb. 14 to conclude the indoor season.
