AUBURN, Ala. -- Covenant women's track and field senior Lilly Smith competed in the 5,000 meter event at the Tiger Track Classic, hosted by Auburn University, on Friday night at the Hutsell-Rosen Track.
Smith was competing as an individual in the meet. The Covenant team is off this weekend before competing in the final two meets of the year over the next two weeks.
Becoming the first track and field athlete to compete at a meet hosted by a NCAA Division I institution, Smith came in 22nd overall in the 5,000 meter run on Friday. The senior finished the race in a time of 18:36.71. It was Smith's second 5,000 meter race of the outdoor season.
"She had a great first mile," head coach Katie Stanford said. "Then at about the halfway mark she got tired, but did a good job of gutting it out the rest of the way. This was good experience for her to get to race a large field around her pace."
Smith finished ahead of South Alabama's Susanna Pudner (19:00.20) and Samford's Anna Huntington (19:00.71) in the field of 27 athletes. Samford sophomore Mary Grace Strozier took home the top spot in the event.
Covenant will compete as a team in the Berry Field Day Invitational on April 12-13 at Mount Berry, Ga.
