Track & Field Posts Strong Results at Rhodes Invitational

MEMPHIS, Tenn. -- Eight program records were broken over the weekend as the Covenant track and field teams competed in the Rhodes Invitational in Memphis on Friday and Saturday.

In a field of teams that included NCAA Division I, II, and III programs, Covenant held its own throughout the meet. Team scores were not accumulated in the meet.

Four program records were set on the women's side, while four men's records fell during the weekend.

Distance events were again the strength of the Scots. On Friday, Hannah Samuels set a program record in the 10,000 meter run with a time of 41:28.48 and finished seventh overall in the event. In the men's 10,000 meter run, Matt Seitz broke the program record with his time of 33:32.34 and was 15th in the event. 

The Scots also saw success in the 5,000 meter races. In the women's run, Lilly Smith blew past her own program record as she finished in a time of 17:52.21 and finished second. The time was 37 seconds faster than Smith's previous program-best time. In the men's 5,000 meter, Micaiah Allison had a strong run of 16:21.51, while Matthew Broussard was not far behind at 16:24.30.

Allison set a program record in the 3,000 meter steeplechase as he came in 12th with a time of 9:59.09. 

Relays also played a part in Covenant's success over the weekend as both teams has program-record times. The women's team of S.K. Lipperd, Smith, Maggie Henry, and Nichole Rittgers finished in 10:01.73 for third overall and a program-best time. A second women's team of Anna Walter, Michelann Settle, Caroline Pepper, and Ashleigh Baker came in sixth with a time of 10:56.36, the second-fastest time for the program. In the men's event, the quartet of Jonathan George, Leif Le Mahieu, David Gaffin, and Brendan Yeager set a program record with their time of 7:59.82 to place third in the event.

In the men's 4x400, the combination of Ben Tyson, Stephen Cone, William Wallace, and William Bryan came in eighth with a season-best time of 3:32.94.

In shorter distance events, Lipperd set a program record in the 400 meter with her time of 1:03.15 and placed 14th overall. Yeager topped his own program-best mark with a time of 2:00.67 in the 800 meter. Bryan made his season debut with a time of 22.86 in the 200 meter, while Cone had a season-best time of 52.94 in the 400 meter.

Covenant will compete in the Emory Invitational on March 22-23 in Atlanta.
