SEWANEE, Tenn. -- Several program records fell and the Covenant track and field teams collected five individual wins at the season-opening Tiger Indoor Invitational, hosted by Sewanee, on Saturday.
The women's team came in fourth overall with a total of 62 points, while the men were sixth with 33 points. The Scots picked up four first place finishes on the women's side and one on the men's.
Covenant tallied 27 of its points on the women's side in the 3,000 meter run as five runners placed inside the top eight. Michelann Settle led the way with her first place time of 11:24.01, while Hannah Samuels was second at 11:42.83. Anna Danek came in fourth in the race at 11:57.64, Ashleigh Baker was sixth at 12:23.18, and Ellie Robinson eighth (13:19.07).
The Covenant women also grabbed a win in the distance medley relay as Settle, S.K. Lipperd, Lilly Smith, and Maggie Henry combined for a time of 13:05.04 to claim first. The time was the second-fastest in the program's history.
The women's team saw two established program records fall. Smith picked up where she left off from last spring as she set a program record in the mile, besting her own mark, with a time of 5:20.42 to place first in the event. In the 800 meter, Lipperd collected her first collegiate win on the track with a program-best time of 2:27.84. Henry came in fifth in the 800 with the second-best program time of 2:34.52.
Virginia Kay Roberts snagged a point for the Scots with her eighth-place finish in the 400 meter and personal record time of 1:06.59. Roberts also set a personal-best in the 200 meter event at 29.94.
The men's team set three program records on the day. Leif Le Mahieu was fourth in the 800 meter race and broke the program record with a time of 2:06.42, while teammates Brendan Yeager (2:07.42) and David Gaffin (2:10.89) finished sixth and seventh, respectively, to score for the Scots.
The Scots also fared well in the mile and 400 meter events. In the mile, Allison was 10th with a time of 4:45.72 and George was 12th at 4:47.92. William Wallace came in 11th in the 400 meters with a time of 56.33, while Cone (56.45) and Ben Tyson (56.98) were not far behind.
Covenant also saw two athletes perform in events for the first time in program history. Cooper Hayes competed in the pole vault and placed fifth after clearing a height of 3.35 meters. Elijah Manuel finished the 55 meter hurdles in a time of 9.76.
Covenant will conclude the indoor season on Monday, Feb. 11 at the 'Southern Indoor Challenge, hosted by Birmingham Southern.
