BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- The Covenant track and field teams saw nine indoor program records fall and several athletes post personal-best times at the 'Southern Indoor Challenge, hosted by Birmingham Southern, on Monday at the Birmingham CrossPlex.
The meet was the finale of the indoor season for the Scots. Covenant will start the outdoor season in March.
The women finished fifth in the meet with 47 total points, while the men were sixth with 28 points. Host Birmingham Southern took home the team title on the women's side and Oglethorpe was the team champion for the men's meet.
The women's side saw four program records set during the day. Hannah Hennigh posted a time of 28.24 in the 200 meter and finished 11th overall in the event. Lindsey Beck placed seventh in the 800 meter with a program-best time of 2:39.05, and Michelann Settle finished third in the 3000 meter with another program record at 11:03.36.
The mile run was dominated by Covenant as Lilly Smith blasted the program record with her time of 5:23.89 to place first in the event. Margaret Fitch was second with her personal record time of 5:31.61. Also in distance events, Hannah Samuels set a personal record in the 5000 meter run at 20:06.70 and finished third.
On the men's side, five program records were set on the day. Tristan Dunlavy topped the previous program mark with his time of 52.80 and placed eighth overall. William Wallace broke the program record in the 800 meter at 2:06.57 for an eighth place finish in the event. For a second straight meet, the mile program record was broken, this time by Jonathan George as he finished third with a time of 4:32.78.
The Scots also saw success in relay events. The men's 4x400 team set a program record with a time of 3:43.90 and placed sixth in the event. Covenant had two men's teams compete in the distance medley relay and the teams finished second and third, respectively. The second place team came in at 11:08.17, while the third place group was at 11:29.76.
The women's 4x400 relay team came in fourth with their time of 4:38.86 and the distance medley relay team topped Piedmont for first place in the event with a time of 13:13.20.
The teams will open the outdoor season on March 3 at the Victor Icebreaker Duals, hosted by Berry.
