Samuels, Smith lead Scots at the Mountain Laurel Invitational

SEWANEE, Tenn. -- Covenant runners finished out their spring track season at the Sewanee Mountain Laurel Invitational on Friday, April 15 with lots of personal and season bests.

Freshmen Hannah Samuels and Lilly Smith placed fifth and sixth in their first ever 3000 meter race. Samuels ran a 11:17, while Smith finished in 11:21. Senior Ruthie Cargill placed 11th in 11:42 in her last collegiate meet.

"Hannah and Lilly ran a great race. They went for it and ended up with great finishes," head coach Katie Stanford said. "It was great to see Ruthie finish out her senior season so well. We are definitely going to miss her. She has set a great tone for this program."

Hannah Hennigh and Caroline Cone both set personal bests in the 200 meters in 28.53 and 28.70, respectively. Hennigh also matched her personal best in the 100 with a 13.61. Cone and Hennigh just missed points with 9th and 10th finishes. Hanna Wilt finished in 15th place in 29.94.

Margaret Fitch took 11 seconds off her time in the women's 1500 meter run with a time of 5:36.

Both women's 4x400 teams also scored points in the meet. The A team made up of Cone, Wilt, Smith and Stephanie Lutz, bested their previous time by one second with a 4:38.10. Cone ran a 63 second split for the first time in her leg of the relay.

The men's team had an impressive meet as well. Henry Paris scored for the Scots in the 400 meter with an 8th place finish and a time of 53.49. Chapman Whitted placed 6th in the 100 with a personal best of 11.76. Mason Gregoire just missed scoring with a 11.98 and a 9th place finish. Whitted, Gregoire and Ryan Seay also ran in the 200 meters and all ran personal bests.

Reed Vaughn set a season best in the 800 meters with a time of 2:03 while Micah Sneller, Nathan Bierema, Hunter Rasmussen and Zach Atchison set personal bests in the 3000 meter with a 9:5810:0610:07 and 10:09 respectively.

Seay, Vaughn, Stephen Seo and Paris finished 2nd in the 4x400 meter relay with a season best of 3:38.09.

"Today was a lot of fun," Stanford added. "We had so many personal bests and a lot of excitement. I'm proud at how hard everyone has worked this spring and look forward to being official with a full season next year."
