LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN -- Six NCAA Tournament teams from a season ago and three ranked foes highlight the 2020 Covenant softball schedule under second-year head coach Brie Carmack.
The schedule includes 38 regular season games, with 16 of those slated for Lookout Mountain. Covenant will play a total of 10 games against six teams (Maryville, Piedmont, Emory, Emory & Henry, DePauw, Birmingham Southern) that made the 2019 NCAA Tournament, including national runner-up Emory.
Covenant's three ranked foes from the final NFCA Top 25 of 2019 include No. 2 Emory, No. 14 Birmingham Southern and No. 25 DePauw.
The season kicks off on Saturday, Feb. 8 with a doubleheader at region and national power Berry. Covenant will play its first eight games away from Lookout Mountain with trips to Judson (Feb. 11), the Birmingham Southern Classic (Feb. 15), and Birmingham Southern (Feb. 22). In the Birmingham Southern Classic, Covenant will face 2019 NCAA Tournament foes in DePauw and Emory & Henry.
The home opener is set for Feb. 25 against Sewanee in a doubleheader. The twin-bill starts a six-game homestand during the final week of February as the Scots will also host Greensboro (Feb. 28) and Mary Baldwin (Feb. 29) in non-conference action.
Covenant will head to Emory on March 3 to open the month before coming back home to face Johnson on March 10. The Scots then travel to Pfeiffer on March 14 before opening USA South play at home against Maryville on March 18.
Along with Maryville, Covenant will host USA South doubleheaders against Agnes Scott (March 25) and Brevard (March 28). Senior Day will take place on March 28.
Covenant's regular season home finale is set for April 2 against Judson. The Scots end the year with USA South trips to Piedmont (April 4), Berea (April 8), and Wesleyan (April 11).
The USA South Tournament is set for play on April 17-18 with first round, best-of-3 series at the top three seeds in each division. The first round winners advance to the double-elimination part of the tournament, which is set to begin on April 24 in Rocky Mount, N.C., as part of the USA South Spring Festival.
- Covenant will face DePauw and Johnson for the first time in program history.
- It is an unbalanced conference schedule for the Scots. Due to location changes last year prompted by weather, Covenant will play just six home conference games and 10 on the road.
- It will be the sixth time, and the second straight year, that Covenant has opened a season against Berry. The Scots last opened a season at Berry in 2014.
- The Brevard games will count towards league standings, but Brevard is ineligible for the USA South Tournament as the institution is in its final year of transition to Division III.
