MARYVILLE, Tenn. -- The Covenant softball team fell twice to USA South foe Maryville in a doubleheader. Covenant was defeated 9-0 in the first game before falling 5-2 in the finale.
Covenant drops to 11-20 on the year and 6-8 in the USA South. Maryville, the defending USA South champions, goes to 22-8 and a perfect 14-0 in league play.
GAME ONE: Maryville 9, Covenant 0
Maryville used a three-run third and a six-run fourth to defeat Covenant, 9-0, in Wednesday's opener.
Covenant was limited to just two hits in the contest, both singles from Faith Manning and Shelby Ralston, as Maryville starter Katlyn Smith went the distance. Smith (15-3) struck out six and did not walk a batter in her five-inning complete-game.
Carsyn Stone retired the first six batters she faced in her start for the Scots. However, Maryville struck for three runs on four hits in the third inning to grab a 3-0 lead. In the fourth, Maryville tacked on six runs, highlighted by Taylor Campbell's three-run homer, to extend the lead to 9-0.
Stone (4-11) got the loss after going three innings. Lauren Kierpa also threw an inning in relief.
Campbell was 2-for-3 with four RBIs to lead Maryville offensively. Morgan Brewer and Casey Joliff had two hits apiece as the host Scots collected 10 hits in the win.
GAME TWO: Maryville 5, Covenant 2
Covenant battled throughout, but Maryville completed the sweep with a 5-2 victory in the finale of the twin-bill.
Maryville scored two runs in the first and would take a 5-0 lead through five innings. Covenant got on the board with single runs in the sixth and seventh innings, but Maryville would hold on for the victory.
Cope Whitaker went 3-for-3 with an RBI to lead Covenant. The Scots got on the board in the sixth with a two-out rally as Erika Mast reached on a dropped fly ball before Manning produced an infield single. Whitaker followed with a run-scoring single to right-center field that plated Mast.
Covenant got closer in the seventh as Madyson Gibbins had an infield single and a subsequent throwing error allowed Jada Allmon to score. However, Maryville starter Casey Joliff got the final out to finish off her complete-game and give Maryville the win.
Joliff (4-4) went seven innings allowing two unearned runs on seven hits. Covenant starter Sarah Huskey (3-7) went six innings and surrendered five runs with two strikeouts.
Maryville scored two runs in the first and Essence Strambler and Campbell had run-scoring hits. The host Scots then added one in the fourth and two more in the fifth, capped by a Joliff RBI single, to take a 5-0 lead.
Alexus Murray went 3-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored, while Sarah Gordon had two hits in three at-bats.
Covenant will conclude the regular season on Saturday against Huntingdon in a USA South doubleheader. First pitch from Lookout Mountain is set for 1 p.m. It will also be Senior Day as the Scots honor their three seniors (Madalyn Ames, Carsyn Stone, Carlin Labuzan).
