Piedmont Sweeps Softball in USA South DH

LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN -- The Covenant softball team fell twice to Piedmont on Tuesday afternoon in USA South action. The Scots dropped game one to the visiting Lions, 8-1, before falling 10-2 in the final game.

Covenant falls to 9-18 overall and 4-6 in USA South play. Piedmont improves to 22-5 and 10-0 in conference games.

GAME ONE: Piedmont 8, Covenant 1

Piedmont used a four-run fifth inning to put the game out of reach for the Scots en route to an 8-1 victory.

The Lions struck first in the top half of the first with two runs. Covenant cut the lead in half in the home half of the inning when Faith Manning reached on a fielder's choice to score Madyson Gibbins.

Piedmont then scored two more in the second and tacked on four in the fifth to score six unanswered to come away with the victory.

Gibbins was the only Scot with multiple hits in the game going 2-for-3 as the Scots produced six hits in the game.

Carsyn Stone (3-10) got the start in the circle and was tagged with the loss. Stone went four innings giving up nine hits, and seven runs (six earned). Lauren Kierpa came in and finished out the final three innings allowing just four hits and a run.

TK Sauls had a 2-for-3 contest for the Lions and Hannah Hoban went 1-for-2 with a pair of RBIs.

Melissa Eckman (9-4) went the complete game, scattering six hits and gave up one unearned run for the win.

GAME TWO: Piedmont 10, Covenant 2

The Lions continued their hitting ways, putting up 13 hits in a 10-2 victory to complete the sweep.

The Scots got on the board first in the bottom of the first inning. Manning hit a sacrifice fly to center to score Gibbins, who had reached on a single to left to lead off the inning.

Piedmont answered with a three-run second, and a two-run third to take a 5-1 lead. The Scots trimmed the lead to three (5-2) in the third with a Gibbins double to plate Aileen Hill.

The Lions then scored five unanswered to take the 10-2 victory.

Gibbons went 2-for-3 with an RBI. The Scots were held to only four hits in the contest.

Sarah Huskey (2-6) got the start but was chased out after 4.1 innings of work. Huskey allowed nine runs (eight earned), on 10 hits while striking out three. Stone came in relief and went 1.1 innings allowing just three hits and one run.

Mariann Kennison went 1-for-3 with 3 RBIs in game two thanks to a three-run home run in the third. Sauls went a perfect 3-for-3 from the play with two RBIs and Madison Garrett went 2-for-4. Katlyn Andrin rounded out the multi-hit players with a 2-for-3 game to go with an RBI.

Madison Whiteside (9-1) went the complete six innings allowing just four hits and two runs while striking out three.


Covenant travels to Macon, Ga., on Saturday to take on Wesleyan in a USA South doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
