Softball Drops Two Against Birmingham Southern

LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN -- The Covenant softball team dropped a pair of games to Birmingham Southern on Tuesday on top of Lookout Mountain. The Scots dropped game one, 12-5, before falling in game two, 4-3, in extra innings.

The game were make-up contests from the Feb. 12 doubleheader that was rained out.

Birmingham Southern is now 18-5 on the year, while Covenant falls to 7-14.

GAME TWO: Birmingham Southern 4, Covenant 3 (8 innings)

The Scots came within one out of clinching a victory before Birmingham Southern's Savannah Lee hit an RBI double to tie things up at three. The visiting Panthers then scored a run in the eighth to cap a 4-3 victory and a doubleheader sweep.

With the international tiebreaker rule in effect in the eighth inning, Birmingham Southern's Annie Clayton came up in the top half to advance Paige Williamson. The Panthers went to the bench and brought in Saydee Keith who hit an RBI single to left to give Birmingham Southern the 4-3 lead.

Shelby Ralston was placed on second to begin the home half of the eighth and Faith Manning bunted her over to third. However, the Panthers' Jessica Perley struck out the next two batters to seal the win for the visitors.

Lauren Kierpa got the start for the Scots and went 6.2 innings scattering seven hits and allowing three runs. Carsyn Stone (2-9) pitched the final 1.1 innings allowing two hits and an unearned run, getting tagged for the loss.

Kirsten Aanensen came off the bench and had a pinch-hit, two-run double to give Covenant the lead in the second to give the Scots the lead. Erika Mast had a 2-for-3 day and Cope Whitaker had a 2-for-4 game.

Savannah Lee went 2-for-3 in game two with two RBIs, including a game-tying RBI in the seventh. Jojo Johnston was the only other Panther with multiple hits in the final game going 2-for-3.

Clayton got the start in the circle for the Panthers and went 2.1 innings allowing seven hits, three runs, and striking out four. Perley (4-3) got the win going the final 5.2 innings allowing only three hits, a walk, struck out four.

GAME ONE: Birmingham Southern 12, Covenant 5

Lee went off in game one going 3-for-5 with three home runs and seven RBIs to push the Panthers past the Scots, 12-5.

After being tied at two after four innings, Lee broke open the scoring with her first two-run home run of the day in the top of the fifth to give the Panthers 4-2 lead. In her next at-bat, Lee was able to get a hold of one in the sixth for her second two-run shot of the day to give Birmingham Southern a 7-2 lead before wrapping it up with a three-run home run to right center to wrap up the day. Lee leads all of Division III in homers with 11 on the year.

Sarah Huskey (2-5) got the start and went four innings allowing four hits, four runs (three earned) while giving up six walks to get tagged with the loss.

Aanensen went 2-for-2 with an RBI and Shelby Ralston had a 2-for-3 day with an RBI single. Cassee Wood made her one hit count with a three-run home run to right field in the home half of the seventh. The homer was Wood's second of the season.

Abby Spencer had a 2-for-4 day with an RBI while Keith went 2-for-4 to lead Birmingham Southern offensively.

Bailey Murphy (2-0) went the first four innings in the start, allowing three hits, two runs, two walks and struck out two. Haley Crumpton came in relief and went two innings not allowing a hit or run while striking out four.


The Scots travel down to Decatur, Ga. to take on Agnes Scott on Wednesday for a conference doubleheader. Game one is set for 5 p.m.
