Softball Splits DH With Mary Baldwin

STAUNTON, Va. -- The Covenant softball team split a doubleheader with Mary Baldwin this afternoon.

The Scots dropped game one 10-0 before bouncing back and winning game two 5-4.

Covenant improves to 4-7 on the year while Mary Baldwin is now 2-8.

GAME TWO: Covenant 5, Mary Baldwin 4

The Scots got on the board first in the top of the first inning with a Faith Manning sacrifice fly to score Madyson Gibbins.

The Fighting Squirrels answered with a solo home run in the bottom half of the second to knot things up at one.

Mary Baldwin then took the lead putting two runs on in the third to take a 3-1 advantage.

Covenant tied everything at three with a Manning 2 RBI double plating Gibbins and Madalyn Ames.

The Scots broke the tie in the top half of the seventh as Cassee Wood to score Erika Mast and Gibbins.

The Fighting Squirrels made the game interesting as Alexis Clark singled home a run to cut the lead to tone in the home half of the seventh. Lulu Klecan picked up the final out of the game forcing Lacy Pugh to win the ballgame 5-4.

Klecan (1-0) pitched five innings and picked up the win, scattering nine hits and allowing only three runs. Baylie Sims started the contest going two innings, allowing only one hit and one run.

Manning produced 3 RBI in the game, while Wood delivered a 2-for-4 day with a pair of RBI. Wood was the only Scot with multiple hits in the contest.

Clark paced the Fighting Squirrels going 3-for-4 with 2 RBI in the game.

GAME ONE: Mary Baldwin 10, Covenant 0

Mary Baldwin used a 10-run fourth inning to defeat the Scots.

Carsyn Stone (1-5) started the game and was tagged with the loss. Stone lasted 3.1 innings giving up three hits and three runs (two earned) in the contest.

Courtney Back (2-4) threw a complete game for the hosts scattering six hits and striking out two.

Cope Whitaker and Gibbins both had 2-for-2 days in game one, accounting for four of the Scots six hits.

Lindsay Simmons paced the Mary Baldwin offense going 2-for-3 with 2 RBI.


The Scots continue their road trip as they take on Greensboro in a doubleheader on Saturday. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
