LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN -- The Covenant softball team is a little over three weeks away from opening the 2019 season as the full schedule was recently released.
Covenant, under first-year head coach Brie Carmack, is currently slated for 36 regular season games with half of those contests taking place on Lookout Mountain.
The Scots will open the season with consecutive home doubleheaders against region foes Berry (Feb. 9) and Birmingham Southern (Feb. 12). Those are the only four home games scheduled for February as Covenant plays the next six games away from the Mountain.
A road trip that includes a trip to the Piedmont Classic (Feb. 16) and doubleheaders at Judson (Ala.) (Feb. 23) and Sewanee (Feb. 27) round out the month. The Scots open March with home twin-bills against Judson (March 1) and Pfeiffer (March 2). The Pfeiffer series is included in the USA South schedule, but does not count towards league standings.
Covenant will begin USA South games on March 20 when it hosts Berea. That week of March will be a busy one for the Scots as they play six games in a span of four days starting with Berea, then Emory (March 21) and LaGrange (March 23).
Covenant's final two home series of the year are key USA South West battles against Piedmont (April 2) and Huntingdon (April 13).
The Scots will travel to Maryville (April 9) along with key road dates at Greensboro (March 16), at Agnes Scott (March 27), and at Brevard (March 30).
The USA South Tournament is set for play on April 19-20 with first round, best-of-3 series at the top three seeds in each division. The first round winners advance to the double-elimination part of the tournament which is set to begin on April 26 in LaGrange, Ga., as part of the USA South Spring Festival.
- Covenant will face Pfeiffer for the first time in program history.
- The most common all-time opponent on this year's schedule is Wesleyan. The Scots are 24-2 all-time against the Wolves and travel to Macon on April 6.
- The doubleheader at Brevard (March 30) will count for league standings, however the Tornados are not eligible for the USA South Tournament as the institution continues its transition to NCAA Division III. Pfeiffer is also ineligible for the league tournament
- The four-game homestand to begin the year is the first time Covenant has played its first four games on Lookout Mountain since 2009.
