BEREA, Ky. -- Jordan Brett hit two home runs on the day and the Covenant softball team scored runs in bunches in a doubleheader sweep over Berea on Saturday afternoon. The Lady Scots took game one 10-2 before capping the sweep with a 14-2 victory in the finale.
Covenant (8-4) has won four straight overall. Berea (2-8) will be a member of the USA South next season.
GAME ONE: Covenant 10, Berea 2
Brett and Casey Grover both homered and drove in three runs apiece to lead Covenant to a 10-2 victory in Saturday's first game.
Covenant scored four runs in the first with the big blow coming off the bat of Grover as she launched a three-run shot. The homer was Grover's first of the season and college career. Shannon Schmitt had an RBI fielder's choice earlier in the frame that plated Madalyn Ames.
The Lady Scots held a 4-2 lead after four innings, but exploded for six runs over the next two frames to secure the win. In the fifth inning, Shade Epes and Jami Johnson worked consecutive bases loaded walks to make it 6-2. In the sixth, Schmitt delivered a run-scoring single to bring Covenant's lead to 7-2. Brett then blasted a three-run homer, her third of the year, to give Covenant a 10-2 lead.
That was plenty of offense for starting pitcher Tyler Epes. Epes (2-1) went five innings and allowed just two runs on seven hits with four strikeouts to pick up the win. Joni Johnson worked a scoreless sixth in relief.
Brett finished 3-for-4, while Ames, Schmitt and Grover had two hits apiece. Schmitt also drove in two runs.
Markiara Smith (0-4) gets the loss in the circle, but she also picked up a hit and an RBI at the plate in the loss.
GAME TWO: Covenant 14, Berea 2
Covenant scored in every inning to cruise to the doubleheader sweep with a 14-2 victory in Saturday's second game.
The scoring started early again for the Lady Scots as three runs crossed in the first. Covenant tacked on four more runs in the second, with Erika Mast highlighting the frame with a bases loaded triple that scored all three runs. Schmitt followed with an RBI single to give Covenant a 7-0 lead.
Covenant blew the game even more wide open with a five-run fifth inning. Hannah Talley had an RBI single before Brett launched her second home run of the day, a three-run shot, to make it 13-2. Covenant added one more later in the inning when Tyler Epes scored on a wild pitch.
Jacquelyne Howard (2-3) got the loss for Berea as she lasted 4.1 innings.
