LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN -- The 38-game schedule for the 10th season of the Covenant softball program and first-year head coach Christine Engbers has been finalized. The slate includes 22 games at home, and a challenging non-conference portion.
The Engbers era will officially get started on Saturday, Feb. 4 when the Lady Scots host Rust for a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. That doubleheader will be the first of five twinbills at home during the month of February.
On Feb. 14, Covenant will host regional power Birmingham Southern followed by home doubleheaders against Mount St. Joseph (Feb. 18) and Berry (Feb. 22).
Covenant ends the month of February at home in a USA South-opening doubleheader against league newcomer Agnes Scott on Feb. 27. The Lady Scots then face Wesleyan in a conference doubleheader on March 3 at home. Covenant will face Wesleyan on the road earlier in the year on Feb. 11, but that doubleheader will not count towards USA South standings.
The Lady Scots will have a 10-game homestand from March 11-22, with eight of those contests coming against USA South opponents, to finish the regular season home schedule. Huntingdon comes to Lookout Mountain on March 11, followed by Maryville (March 15), North Carolina Wesleyan (March 17), William Peace (March 18) and Centre (March 22).
Covenant will end the year with 10 straight road games, finishing with a doubleheader at Piedmont on April 1.
The USA South Tournament will move to a two-weekend format this year after three institutions (Wesleyan, Agnes Scott and Salem) joined the conference. The opening weekend will be played at higher seeded teams on April 7-8, followed by the final teams heading to LaGrange, Ga., for the Spring Festival on April 13-15. The championship round of the tournament is slated for Saturday, April 15.
- Feb. 4 is the earliest date Covenant has started a season
- This is the second straight year that Covenant is scheduled to play 22 home games. The Lady Scots went 12-9-1 on Lookout Mountain a season ago.
- The Lady Scots will be competing in the West Division of the USA South this season as the league split into two divisions after gaining three new members. Covenant is joined by Agnes Scott, Huntingdon, LaGrange, Maryville, Piedmont, Salem and Wesleyan in the division.
- Covenant will also face future USA South member Berea on the road on March 4. Berea is set to join the league in 2017-18. Covenant swept the Mountaineers in a doubleheader last season on Lookout Mountain.
