Top Moments of 2015-16: Softball Rallies at Ferrum

NOTE: This is the fifth of a weekly summer series on athletics.covenant.edu highlighting some of the top athletic moments and accomplishments from the 2015-16 academic year. This is not a ranking, or even a full comprehensive list, because of the many great accomplishments Covenant athletic programs had during the year. We hope you enjoy a look back at the many triumphs of the Covenant Scots during the 2015-16 year. --- Andrew Mindeman, Sports Information Director.

To say things looked bleak for the Covenant softball team in its doubleheader opener at Ferrum on March 12 would be an understatement. The Lady Scots, facing one of the top pitchers in the USA South in Ferrum's Courtney Rudd, trailed 3-0 entering the top of the seventh inning and had collected just five hits on the day.

But all that changed in a matter of minutes.

Jordan Brett led off the inning with a double followed by a Joni Johnson walk and a Kat Andrews RBI single that drove in Brett cutting the Covenant deficit to 3-1. After Rudd struck out the next two Covenant hitters, the Lady Scots were down to their final out. After a walk to Jami Johnson that loaded the bases, Morgan Lane came through with a clutch two-run single to center field that scored pinch-runners Kaitlyn Sirmons and Tyler Epes to tie the score at 3-3. Covenant wasn't done yet as two batters later Madison Quirk delivered a go-ahead RBI single that plated pinch-runner Carsyn Stone giving the Lady Scots a 4-3 lead. In all, four runs came across on four hits in the inning.

Ferrum got the potential tying run to third base with one out in its half of the seventh, but starting pitcher Cris Gant worked around the trouble by inducing a fly out before ending the game with a strikeout.

The win gave Covenant a three-game win streak in USA South play at the time and marked the first win over Ferrum in program history. Ferrum would go on later in the season and win the USA South Tournament to earn a berth into the NCAA Tournament.
