Softball Splits Senior Day Doubleheader with Huntingdon

LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN -- The Covenant softball team sent its seniors out with a doubleheader split with USA South foe Huntingdon on Saturday. Huntingdon took game one 6-3, but Covenant responded with a 9-5 victory in the second game.

Covenant goes to 17-18-1 overall and 7-13 in the USA South, while Huntingdon is now 16-18 on the year and 10-8 in league play.

After the games ended, Covenant recognized its three seniors, Morgan Lane, Kendall Whann and Madison Quirk, for their efforts and significant contributions to the program over the last four years.

GAME ONE: Huntingdon 6, Covenant 3

Huntingdon scored all six runs in the middle innings to build a lead and would hold on for a 6-3 victory over Covenant in the first game on Saturday.

Covenant took a 1-0 lead in the third inning when Jordan Brett singled home Lane with two outs. But Huntingdon took the lead for good with a three-run fourth inning and then added to the lead with a solo home run from Jessica Swindle in the fifth before scoring two more runs in the sixth for a 6-1 edge.

The Lady Scots chipped away at the deficit in the seventh as Lane produced an RBI single that plated Shade Epes. Shannon Schmitt then drove in Jami Johnson with a double to left field to make it 6-3, but Huntingdon escaped further damage and took the victory.

Schmitt had two of Covenant's five hits in the game with an RBI. Lane, Brett and Joni Johnson also had a hit apiece. Starter Tyler Epes (4-7) gets the loss as she worked 5.2 innings in the circle.

Huntingdon's Raina Lanier (8-8) received the victory as she went all seven innings allowing three runs on five hits with 11 strikeouts. Jesse Dunn had two hits and two RBIs to lead the visiting Hawks' offense.

GAME TWO: Covenant 9, Huntingdon 5

Covenant scored four runs in the first and three in the second to build a 7-0 lead and would earn a doubleheader split with a 9-5 victory in game two over Huntingdon.

Schmitt did most of the damage for the Lady Scots as she went 3-for-4 with a home run, six RBIs and two runs scored. Kasey Hart was 2-for-4 with a run, while Brett and Joni Johnson also tallied two hits apiece in the win.

In the first, Schmitt singled home Jami Johnson to give Covenant a 1-0 lead and force a Huntingdon pitching change. Quirk added an RBI single later in the inning before Joni Johnson drove in a pair with a single to left field making it 4-0. In the second, all the runs came on a three-run home run by Schmitt, her second of the year, that gave Covenant a 7-0 lead.

Huntingdon scored three runs in the third and one in the fourth to draw within 7-4. The visiting Hawks then added a run in the sixth to make it 7-5, but Covenant answered in the sixth. Schmitt capped her big day with a two-run double to left field in the sixth to give the Lady Scots a couple of insurance runs and a 9-5 lead.

Cris Gant (6-6) gets the win as she went four inning allowing one earned run on five hits. Carsyn Stone came on in relief and gets the save as she worked the final three innings and surrendered just one run on three hits.

Swindle (1-1) is hit with the loss for Huntingdon. Katrina Harden went 2-for-4 with two RBIs in the loss for the Hawks.


Covenant will travel to face nationally-ranked Berry in a non-conference doubleheader on Tuesday in Rome, Ga. The first game is set for 2 p.m.
