Nationally-Ranked BSC Defeats Softball Twice

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- No. 16-ranked Birmingham Southern shut out the Covenant softball team twice on Tuesday in non-conference action. Covenant dropped both games by identical 8-0 scores.

Covenant drops to 14-17-1 overall, while Birmingham Southern goes to 27-5 on the year. Birmingham Southern is ranked No. 16 in the latest NFCA Top 25.

The Lady Scots managed just four hits in the two games combined. Shannon Schmitt, Madison Quirk and Joni Johnson each had a hit in the first game, while Kasey Hart tallied the lone hit in game two. 

In the first game, Birmingham Southern scored five runs in the second and three more in the fourth in ease to the 8-0 victory. The host Panthers scored single runs in the first, third, fourth and sixth innings in game two around a four-run fifth inning to complete the doubleheader sweep.

Carsyn Stone tossed 2.2 innings of relief in game one and did not allow an earned run. Tyler Epes (4-6) picked up the loss in the first game. In game two, Cris Gant (4-6) made the start and went 4.1 innings allowing three earned runs on six hits in the loss.


Covenant will host USA South foe LaGrange on Friday for a doubleheader. Game one is set for 2 p.m. on Lookout Mountain.
