LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN -- The Covenant softball team took advantage of 22 walks and scored 30 runs on 17 hits to sweep a doubleheader from non-conference regional foe Sewanee on Tuesday afternoon. The Lady Scots took game one 15-1 before claiming the sweep with a 15-2 victory in game two.
Covenant has won five of its last six games and moves to 10-7-1 overall. Sewanee remains winless at 0-11.
Pitching was also in peak form for the Lady Scots as the team allowed three runs on eight hits in the two games combined.
GAME ONE: Covenant 15, Sewanee 1
A seven-run first inning put the game away for Covenant as the Lady Scots cruised to a 15-1 victory in Tuesday's opener.
After Sewanee scored a run in the first to take a brief 1-0 lead, Covenant answered by sending 11 batters to the plate in its half of the inning scoring seven runs. The Lady Scots drew six walks in the frame, while Madison Quirk produced the lone hit with an RBI single to right field that plated Jami Johnson.
It was more of the same for the Lady Scots in the second as they scored four times to grab an 11-1 lead. Jordan Brett doubled home Shannon Schmitt, while Madalyn Ames had an infield RBI single later in the inning. Covenant added two runs in both the third and fourth innings for the final margin.
Quirk finished 2-for-3 with three RBIs and a walk, while Brett and Kat Andrews drove in two runs each.
GAME TWO: Covenant 15, Sewanee 2
Covenant scored eight runs in the first and completed the doubleheader sweep with a 15-2 victory in the nightcap.
Schmitt and Kendall Whann each went 3-for-4 with two RBIs, while Ames and Andrews also drove in a pair. Tyler Epes (3-2) allowed two runs in three innings of work to pick up the victory before Andrews finished off the game by tossing two shutout frames.
The Lady Scots scored eight runs on four hits in the first to take an 8-0 lead. Schmitt and Whann produced run-scoring hits and Morgan Lane capped the inning with a two-run single to left field. Covenant added two runs in the second on a Sewanee error on an Ames batted ball for a 10-0 lead.
Sewanee scratched across two runs in the third, but the Lady Scots responded with a run in its half of the inning on a Whann RBI single. In the bottom of the fourth, Andrews doubled home both Shade Epes and Kaitlyn Sirmons before Stone had an RBI ground out and Schmitt followed with an RBI single for the final margin.
Covenant will host USA South foe Averett on Saturday for a doubleheader. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
