Softball Rallies in Game One, Sweeps Mary Baldwin

STAUNTON, Va. -- The Covenant softball team rallied in the late innings to take a 4-2 victory in game one of a doubleheader at Mary Baldwin on Friday before run-ruling the host Fighting Squirrels 14-2 in the nightcap.

The wins move Covenant to 7-6-1 overall and 2-4 in the USA South on the year. Mary Baldwin drops to 2-8 overall and 0-6 in league play.

Madison Quirk had six hits combined in the two games with seven RBIs, while Morgan Lane had five hits. Both Quirk and Lane homered in the second game.

GAME ONE: Covenant 4, Mary Baldwin 2

Covenant trailed 2-1 heading into the sixth, but the Lady Scots scored twice that inning and once more in the seventh to secure a 4-2 win in Friday's first game.

Down a run in the sixth, Quirk and Joni Johnson started the inning with consecutive singles and then pulled off a double steal to put runners at second and third with no outs. Pinch hitter Madalyn Ames reached on a fielder's choice as Quirk was thrown out at home, but an error allowed Johnson and Ames to come all the way around to score and give the Lady Scots a 3-2 lead.

In the seventh, Covenant added an insurance run as Quirk singled home Jordan Brett with two outs.

Covenant starter Tyler Epes (2-2) went the distance allowing two runs on six hits with three strikeouts. Epes surrendered two runs in the first inning before tossing six straight scoreless frames.

Mary Baldwin scored twice in the first to take a 2-0 lead. Quirk produced an RBI single in the fourth to draw Covenant within 2-1.

Kasey Hart went 3-for-4, while Quirk was 3-for-4 with two RBIs for the Lady Scots. Brett added two hits and a run scored and Lane, Shannon Schmitt and Johnson each had a hit apiece.

GAME TWO: Covenant 14, Mary Baldwin 2

Covenant scored in every inning and the Lady Scots completed a USA South doubleheader sweep of Mary Baldwin with a 14-2 victory in five innings.

Lane went 4-for-4 with a home run, two RBIs and three runs scored while Quirk was 3-for-3 with five RBIs and two runs. Schmitt was 2-for-4 with a pair of runs batted in and three runs scored and Kat Andrews drew three walks and drove in two runs.

Covenant scored single runs in the first and second innings to take a 2-0 lead. Lane doubled home Brett in the first, while Joni Johnson delivered an RBI single in the second that scored Quirk, who doubled to leadoff the inning. 

The Lady Scots scored three more runs in the third to grab a 5-0 lead. All three runs came off the bat of Quirk as she launched a three-run homer to center field, her first of the year, scoring Schmitt and Lane.

The game was broken wide open with Covenant's four-run fourth inning that gave the visitors a 9-0 edge. Schmitt doubled in two runs and Quirk followed with a two-run single to cap the inning. In the fifth, Covenant added five more as Lane homered to center field, her second of the year, while Andrews and Amber Grimes registered two-run hits later in the inning.

Covenant starter Carsyn Stone went three innings and picked up the win. Stone (1-1) scattered three hits and did not allow a run while striking out two in her start. Cris Gant came on to throw the final two innings. 

Mary Baldwin starter Kate Dickinson (0-3) allowed nine earned runs in five innings of work as she is credited with the loss.


Covenant travels to Ferrum on Saturday for another USA South doubleheader. First pitch of game one is set for 1 p.m.
