LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN -- Mary Katherine Miller, a senior at The Veritas School (Ridgeland, Miss.), has committed to attend Covenant College and play softball for head coach Sara Russell starting in the fall of 2015.
Miller is a four-year varsity left fielder and first baseman for the Lady Lions and head coach Stacey Sykes. Under previous head coach Rachel Wright, Miller helped her team compete in the state championship tournament in 2011 and 2012.
Her stellar athletic abilities are just a reflection of her academic ones. Miller has earned her high school's valedictorian honor due in part to her maintaining a 4.0 GPA throughout her time in school.
"I chose Covenant because I fell in love with the campus when I attended the EDGE Conference the summer before my freshman year of high school," Miller said. "During my sophomore year, my family took a campus tour and it confirmed even more that Covenant was where I wanted to go to college. The more I learned about the college, met with current students, staff and faculty, the stronger the calling from the Lord came to make Covenant my home for the next four years. Plus, I thought it would be cool to go to college on a mountain."
Miller added, "During one of my visits to Covenant, my family and I attended a game and it really sparked an interest in me to continue playing softball at a collegiate level. The coaches took an interest not only in my softball abilities, but also in my personal life. I want to play for a team that not only cares about softball, but values relationships with each other and with the Lord."
Miller plans to double major in Physics and Community Development with a minor is Spanish while at Covenant. Miller shared her future plans, "I think God is calling me to serve his people in a foreign country perhaps as a missionary."
Russell, along with the team and coaching staff, are pleased to have Mary Katherine Miller join the Lady Scots in 2015.
