FERRUM, Va.-- The Covenant softball team saw their four-game winning streak snapped by Ferrum, 10-2, then lost 6-5 in extra innings in the second game of their USA South conference doubleheader on Saturday.
It is Covenant's first foray into the conference schedule, as they fall to 5-3 on the year and 0-2 in the USA South. Ferrum moves to 7-1 on the season, 2-0 in conference play.
Game 1: Covenant 2, Ferrum 10
In the first game of the twin-bill, Ferrum jumped on Covenant and pitcher Cris Gant early, scoring five runs in the first and leading 8-0 after two. Kylene Culler hit a grand slam in the first and Lindsey Slover had a three-run triple in the second.
Ferrum tacked on runs in the fourth and sixth innings.
Gant (2-1) gets her first loss of the season. Amanda Roberts moves to 3-0 with five innings of two-run ball.
Lane and Quirk each had two hits and an RBI for the Lady Scots. Culler and Slover had four RBIs apiece to lead the Panthers.
Game 2: Covenant 5, Ferrum 6 (8)
In game two of the doubleheader, the Lady Scots couldn't hold on to an early lead before succombing to the Panthers in extra innings.
Tyler Epes was in the circle starting game two for Covenant, and she was staked to a 5-0 lead after two innings.
In the top of the 2nd, with two on and two outs, Massetto delivered with an RBI single and Brett followed with a double to center field that plated two and made it 5-0.
After amassing five runs on six hits in the first two innings, the Lady Scots were only able to muster one hit and one walk against Emily Taylor and Courtney Rudd, who combined to go for six scoreless innings with eight strikeouts.
Meanwhile, the Panthers, who had just two hits in the first three innings, were able to climb back into it with a three run fourth off Epes. The big blow was a three-run home run by Slover with one out to pull Ferrum within two.
Ferrum scratched out runs in the bottom of the sixth and the bottom of the seventh to tie the game and send it to extras.
In the bottom of the eighth inning, with a runner on second and one out, Culler delivered the walk-off single to center off new Covenant pitcher Joni Johnson to give Ferrum the doubleheader sweep.
Johnson (2-1) gets the loss after giving up one hit and one run in 0.1 innings, while Rudd (1-0) gets credit for the victory after tossing four shutout innings with five strikeouts.
Brett went 2-for-4 with a double and two RBIs. Massetto had a single and scored two runs while driving in one.
Slover went 3-for-4 for the Panthers with three runs batted in.
The Lady Scots will travel back to Lookout Mountain to embark upon an eight game homestand in a weeklong period. They will kick it off on Wednesday against Sewanee. The doubleheader will start at 1 p.m.
