FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. -- Covenant softball junior Morgan Lane was named USA South Player of the Week, while freshman Joni Johnson was tabbed as the Rookie Pitcher of the Week, announced the conference on Monday afternoon.
The two players become the first Covenant softball athletes to earn these awards in the program's history within the USA South.
Lane, a junior from Chattanooga, Tennessee, was perfect at the plate, going a combined 4-for-4 with three home runs, eight RBIs, five runs scored, one double, and two walks as the Lady Scots swept a doubleheader from Agnes Scott last week. In the second game, a 13-2 win, Lane was a perfect 3-for-3 with two homers, six RBIs and three runs scored. Lane is batting a robust .550 this season with three home runs and 13 RBIs.
Johnson, a freshman from Forest Hill, Louisiana, picked up a save and a win in the games against Agnes Scott. In a game one 4-3 win, Johnson came on in relief to toss the final two innings, allowing just one hit to notch the save. The freshman started game two in the circle and threw three perfect innings retiring all nine hitters she faced and received the victory. Johnson is 2-0 with a 0.68 ERA on the year.
