Lady Scots Drop Two Against Averett

LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN -- The Covenant softball team scored 10 runs in game two, but the Lady Scots could not overcome visiting Averett on Friday afternoon. Averett took both games by scores of 13-3 in game one and 13-10 in the second game.

Covenant drops to 10-24 overall and 3-19 in the USA South. Averett, currently in second place in the USA South, improves to 24-8 for the year and 18-4 in league action.

In game one, Averett scored nine runs in the second inning and cruised to the victory. The visiting Cougars added four runs in the fifth before Covenant tallied three in its half of the inning.

Morgan Lane and Jordan Brett had two hits apiece for the Lady Scots. Covenant had seven hits as a team. Brett and Madison Quirk each had an RBI single in the Lady Scots' three-run fifth, while Kendall Whann drove in a run with a fielder's choice.

Cori Hilt (6-12) received the loss for Covenant as she went all five innings. Averett's Mary Beth Smith (12-5) gets the win. Averett was led offensively by Jessica Long as she finished 2-for-4 with four RBIs.

In the second game, Lauren Johns went 2-for-2 with three RBIs but the Lady Scots could not outscore the Cougars in the high-scoring affair.

Johns was one of four players to earn multiple hits for Covenant. Chandler Shepherd, Quirk and Kaitlyn Sirmons also had two hits apiece. Shepherd scored two runs, while Quirk and Sirmons each scored a run and produced an RBI.

Covenant scored twice in the first inning to take a 2-0 lead. Johns had a sacrifice fly and Quirk singled in a run to highlight the inning.

A 40-minute fog delay ensued after the first inning. Once play resumed, Averett scored single runs in the second and third innings to tie the score at 2-2. But Covenant responded with six runs in the fourth inning. Nicole White, Sirmons and Brett each had run-producing hits in the frame as the Lady Scots took an 8-2 lead.

Averett responded with six runs in the the fifth to knot the score once again. The Cougars added five more in the sixth to take a 13-8 edge. Johns' two-run double in the bottom of the sixth pulled Covenant to within 13-10, but the home team could not get closer.

Covenant starter Hannah Rogers (4-12) picks up the loss, while Smith (13-5) is credited with the win for Averett.

Covenant will host USA South foe Mary Baldwin on Saturday beginning at 1 p.m. Three seniors - Shepherd, Meagan Hess and Johns - will be honored as part of Senior Day.
