Scots Weekly: Stats & Notes (March 24-29)

Scots Weekly: Stats & Notes (March 24-29)

It was another busy week in Covenant athletics as spring teams continued the middle portions of their schedules. The baseball team continued its outstanding play by going 4-0, while softball went 2-2. Women's tennis earned two big wins as well during the week.

RESULTS:

Baseball (4-0):
March 24 - won 12-2 against Johnson
March 27 - won 5-2 at LaGrange
March 29 - won 7-6 and 9-3 at LaGrange

Softball (2-2):
March 26 - lost 10-1 and 8-0 to Huntingdon
March 29 - won 11-3 and 12-1 over Wesleyan

Men's Tennis (0-2):
March 26 - lost 9-0 to Huntingdon
March 27 - lost 8-1 to Point

Women's Tennis (2-0):
March 26 - won 5-4 over Huntingdon
March 27 - won 9-0 over Point

BY THE NUMBERS:

1: The women's tennis team's 5-4 victory over Huntingdon last Wednesday marked the program's first win against the Hawks.

9: The baseball team's current conference winning streak. The Scots have swept three straight USA South series to improve to 12-3 in the league. Overall, Covenant has won seven in a row and 10 of its last 11.

13: Baseball sophomore pitcher Garrett Kriston tied a program record with 13 strikeouts in the Scots' 7-6 win over LaGrange on Saturday. Kriston tied the mark set by Micah Mabe in 2013, also against LaGrange.

3: This number reflects two parts of crucial victories for Covenant teams this week. First, Lindsday Geving won in three sets to clinch a 5-4 victory for the women's tennis team over Huntingdon on Wednesday. Three is also the number of RBIs by David Lockwood on his two-out double in the top of the ninth that gave the baseball team a 7-6 win at LaGrange on Saturday.

RAISING AWARENESS FOR CYSTIC FIBROSIS:

The softball team helped raise awareness for Cystic Fibrosis on Saturday. The team wore special gray and purple jerseys to commemorate the event and Ginger Birnbaum of the local Chattanooga chapter of the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation spoke before the games. Caroline Berry, a Covenant student who has Cystic Fibrosis, threw out the first pitch (see video below).

Cystic Fibrosis is an inherited disease that affects about 30,000 people in the United States, with 1,000 new cases each year.

NOTES:

The baseball team will host current USA South leader Ferrum for three games this weekend starting on Friday at 4 p.m. ... Softball will host Averett for two games on Friday and then hold Senior Day activities on Saturday when they host Mary Baldwin... Both tennis teams will also be in action at home this week against Averett and Mary Baldwin (women only)... Baseball sophomore Perry Rigby was named USA South Player of the Week and was a honorable mention Hitter of the Week by the NCBWA... Z Arima earned USA South Rookie of the Week honors... Men's basketball junior Colton McGriff was named to the GABCA second team all-state team.
