Meredith Sweeps Lady Scots in USA South Action

RALEIGH, N.C. -- In a rescheduled doubleheader from March 7, the Covenant softball team was defeated twice by USA South foe Meredith on Thursday afternoon. The Lady Scots fell 6-0 in game one and then 4-1 in the day's second game.

Covenant (8-14, 3-9 USA South) mustered only seven hits on the day. Lauren Johns was 3-for-4 in the two games combined to lead the offensive attack.

Covenant starting pitcher Cori Hilt (5-7) took the loss in game one. Hilt allowed three earned runs on nine hits in six innings of work. The right-hander struck out two and walked one in her outing.

Hilt's counterpart for Meredith, Amanda Beirne (12-10), went the distance scattering five hits with nine strikeouts and a walk for the Avenging Angels.

Meredith (13-13, 7-5 USA South) scored single runs in the second, fourth and fifth innings to take a 3-0 lead. The Avenging Angels added three runs in the sixth to pull away for the win. Leah Friedman went 2-for-4 and Katlyn Johnson finished 2-for-3 with an RBI and two runs scored.

In the day's second game, Johns was the only Lady Scot to record a hit as she went 2-for-3. Covenant scored its lone run of the nightcap in the seventh inning via a wild pitch that enabled Kendall Whann to score from third.

Meredith got on the board first in the bottom of the third inning with three runs. The inning was highlighted by Lorri Cole's two-run home run to give the hosts a 3-0 lead. Meredith added a single run in the fourth before Covenant scored its run in the seventh.

Lady Scots starter Hannah Rogers (3-7) pitched well but was handed the loss. Rogers allowed 10 hits but just three earned runs in six innings in the circle. Meredith's Beirne (13-10) got her second victory of the day with another complete-game effort surrendering one run on two hits.

Covenant will be back in action on Friday at USA South member Methodist in Fayetteville, N.C. Game one of the doubleheader is set for 1 p.m.
