Softball Earns Doubleheader Split at William Peace

RALEIGH, N.C. -- Five different players had two hits for the Covenant softball team in game one as the Lady Scots notched their first USA South victory with a 10-8 win at William Peace on Saturday afternoon. Game two of the doubleheader went the way of the hosts, however, as William Peace defeated Covenant 8-0 in five innings.

Covenant moves to 3-9 overall on the season and 1-5 in league play. William Peace goes to 8-10 on the season and 4-4 in the USA South.

GAME ONE: Covenant 10, William Peace 8

Morgan Lane, Jordan Brett, Lauren Johns, Madison Quirk and Meagan Hess each had two hits to lead a 14-hit Covenant attack as the Lady Scots took game one of the doubleheader 10-8 against William Peace.

Lane and Brett each went 2-for-5 with two RBIs, while Brett added two runs scored. Johns and Quirk both finished 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored and Hess was also 2-for-4.

Covenant scored six runs on seven hits and with the help of four William Peace errors in the top of the first inning. Brett tripled home both Chandler Shepherd and Lane and Johns followed with a single that plated Brett. Later in the inning, Nicole White produced a two-run single that scored Quirk and Johns to make it 5-0. The scoring was capped in the inning by a Shepherd single to make it 6-0.

William Peace answered with four runs of its own in the bottom half of the first, but Covenant responded with one in the second to make it 7-4. Quirk singled home Brett in that second inning.

Covenant led 7-5 entering the seventh before adding three more insurance runs. Kendall Whann scored on a passed ball and Lane drove in a pair with a double to give the Lady Scots a 10-5 edge. Those three runs became huge in the bottom of the seventh as the host Pacers added a three-run home run off the bat of Jennibeth Burge that cut the Covenant lead to 10-8.

Covenant starter Cori Hilt (2-4) got her second win of the season as she went all seven innings. Hilt struck out four and walked three. Heather Dindinger (3-3) received the loss for the Pacers after she allowed six earned runs on 14 hits, whiles triking out five.

Burge finished 2-for-4 with a home run, four RBIs and a run scored for William Peace.

GAME TWO: William Peace 8, Covenant 0

William Peace starting pitcher Aaryn Deal allowed three hits over five innings and the Pacers took game two of the doubleheader 8-0 in five innings.

Deal (4-5) scattered three hits and struck out four. Shepherd, Johns and White each recorded one hit for the Lady Scots in the loss.

William Peace got on the board in the bottom of the first as Brandi Stamey hit a leadoff solo home run. The Pacers added two runs in the fourth and then five more in the fifth to pull away for the victory. Stamey finished 2-for-4, Michelle Sheldon-Gregorio went 3-for-3 with two runs scored and Casey Taylor was 1-for-2 with two RBIs.

Hannah Rogers (1-5) was saddled with the loss for Covenant. Rogers went 4.1 innings and allowed seven earned runs on 11 hits with three strikeouts. 

Covenant will back on the diamond on Wednesday when they travel to face USA South rival Maryville for a doubleheader. First pitch of game one is set for 1 p.m.
